The Botanical City Team thanks Michael Sorkin for his encouragement, lessons, and love. Every word, every line, every moment will be treasured forever in our hearts.

"Xiongan is a city of dualities. Urban and Rural. Flood and Drought. Modern and Traditional. Fast and Slow. Upper And Lower. The task is to synthesize all of these into the greenest city on earth. The Upper City is dense, expansive, and very urban.  Distances will be great: the city is wider than Manhattan is long. The Lower City – the “Peninsula” – is different, predominantly green, with a sprinkling of small towns and villages, offering another style and speed of life on the water. What has emerged from our approach is the Anxin Archipelago, a cluster of islands, most green, eight built. ​The eight constructed islands collaborate to form the Village of Villages, a serious town of 80,000. How to mobilize this difference at the tip of the Peninsula, the site of the Anxin Cluster? We begin with a Big Move: relocate the envisioned 1000-year dike to swap land for lake, creating a  third space for the development of an amphibian condition" Michael Sorking Studio, 2019.
